British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Canada is British Columbia’s largest post-secondary institutions with more than 48,000 students enrolled annually (16,600 full-time, 31,600 part-time). BCIT offers practical career credentials designed for the workplace, including degrees, diplomas and certificates spanning Applied and Natural Sciences, Business and Media, Computing and Information Technology, Engineering, Health Sciences, Transportation, and Trades.

Established in 1964, BCIT has five campuses at Burnaby (main campus), Downtown Campus, Marine Campus, Aerospace Technology Campuses and Great Northern Way Campus, as well as satellite locations province-wide. BCIT’s international partnerships span training, education and research initiatives in South America, Central America, East Asia and Eastern Europe.

BCIT School of Business is one of Canada’s largest business schools and offers 40 career-oriented credentials ranging from Associate Certificates to Bachelor’s Degrees at three different campuses.

BCIT Marine Campus (BMC) is located in North Vancouver on the water front near the Lonsdale Quay. Here students can learn a wide variety of courses and programs in navigation, marine engineering, seamanship, maritime and maritime security.

Academic & Training Programs


School of Business - Diploma & Certificate

  • Diploma in International Business Management - Global Supply Chain  (full-time, 2 years): The BCIT Global Supply Chain diploma program focuses on developing international business strategies to effectively manage international supply chains. Global Supply Chain students undertake a 10 week Business Consulting Project in their final term. Graduates are eligible to enter the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation CITT professional designation programs.
  • Certificate in International Trade and Transportation Logistics  (part-time, 2 years): Each course in the program is developed by working professionals in operations and international trade. You’ll get the most current, up-to-date information and the practical skills you can use in your everyday duties in supply chain management and logistics. This includes courses from the Canadian Institute of Traffic & Transportation (CITT) and the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA).

School of Transportation - Co-op Diploma

  • Marine Engineering Diploma (4 years): The Diploma in Marine Engineering Co-operative Education program provides you with a solid background in the principles of construction, operation and maintenance of diesel engine propulsion plants on ships. This Transport Canada accredited 4-year diploma program begins in September each year and consists of 4 terms of classroom instruction interspersed with 3 co-op terms. You will be given assistance to find suitable employment throughout your cooperative training period to obtain your Certificate of Competency.
  • Nautical Sciences Diploma (4 years): The Nautical Sciences Diploma is a 4 year co-operative education program for students entering the merchant marine as trainee deck officers. You will be given assistance to find suitable employment throughout your cooperative training period to obtain your Certificate of Competency. Upon obtaining your Certificate of Competency, you have a good chance of being employed as navigation officers on merchant ships worldwide.

Associate Certificate Programs

  • Bridge Watchman (full-time, 12 weeks): This entry-level program is based on modular courses and provides you with the following training certificates: BCIT Recognition of Training in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Industry Canada Restricted Operator's Certificate - Maritime Commercial (ROC - MC) and, Marine Basic First Aid Certificate (MBFA). Successful completion will also make you eligible for four months of sea time remission.
  • Master 150GT Domestic (part-time, 25 weeks): The Program consists of modular based courses that are offered throughout the year, to prepare students towards the Master 150GT Domestic Certificate of Competency. There are 7 courses that make up the 25 week program. These courses are offered on a course by course basis and are not offered as a full-time program.
  • Master 500GT Domestic (part-time, 23 weeks): The Program consists of modular based courses that are offered throughout the year, to prepare students towards the Master 500GT Domestic Certificate of Competency. There are 8 courses that make up the 23 week program. These courses are offered on a course by course basis and are not offered as a full-time program.

Apprenticeship Program

  • Marine Mechanical Technician Program (MMT): The Marine Mechanical Technician is a 2 level apprenticeship program. Theory training includes the following topics - Diesel engines, Gasoline engines, Outboard engines, Stern drives, and Inboard drive trains. The Marine Mechanical Technician apprenticeship program is offered at the BCIT/VCC Motive Power Centre of Excellence Campus on Annacis island in Burnaby, BC. In BC, an individual can become certified as a Marine Mechanical Technician by completing the MMT program or by challenging the certification. Apprenticeship programs are for individuals who have an employer to sponsor them and challenge programs are for individuals who have extensive experience working in the occupation and wish to challenge the certification.
