Training Programs

  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency SVOP (4 days - 26 hours): : The SVOP is a Transport Canada certification to operate a Small Commercial Boat less than 5 Tonnes for Passenger and Cargo boats and less than 15 Gross Tonnes for Commercial Fishing boats. The participants get a basic understanding of the hazards associated with the marine environment and their own vessel and the prevention of shipboard incidents; the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a small non-pleasure vessel in near coastal and sheltered waters under normal operating conditions, including darkness and restricted visibility; and additional knowledge on aids to navigation and seamanship to supplement individual experience.
  • Marine Emergency Duties MED (1 day - 8 hours): Marine Emergency Duties A3 is a one day class concerned with EMERGENCIES on ships such as fire fighting, distress signals, man overboard, abandon ship and cold water shock/hypothermia.
  • Restricted Operator Certificate Marine Radio License ROC-M (1 day - 8 hours): Restricted Operator Course Maritime is required for all boats using DSC (Digital Selective Calling) VHF radios within 25 miles of shore. As long as you do not operate further out, or your vessel is licensed to go no more than 25 nautical Miles offshore, an ROC-M course (one day) course will usually suffice.
  • Practical Small Vessel Marine Training: The certificate requirements for small commercial vessel operators in Canada [less than 15 Gross Tons and less than 12 passengers] have no seatime requirements, unlike higher Master (Captain) licenses. Datum Marine offers practical training solutions in many formats, but it is usually only cost-effective for groups who would like the training done on their own vessels. While in some special cases they provide vessels for the clients, this is not part of the Small Vessel Operator Curriculum.
