Transport Canada Approved Maritime Training Programs in Courtenay BC, Canada

Established in 1998 in Victoria BC, Heads-Up Navigation trains commercial skippers & crew and pleasure craft operators with Transport Canada and Industry Canada approved courses. Training is offered at its location In Sidney, BC near Victoria which is next to the Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries Terminal. Classes are also available in Qualicum Beach area.

Heads-Up Navigation offers all courses for any location in British Columbia and Canada including the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and point north of the Arctic Circle. Travel and accommodations are arranged at time of booking.


Classes are available at - Sidney, Qualicum Beach and also available in other territories and On-the-water training can be done at any location on your own boat as well.

Training Programs




Transport Canada Courses

  • Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS), Formerly MED A-3 (8 hours): This course provides basic safety training for crew-members on small passenger vessels (up to 12 passengers), work boats, sport fishing charters, fishing vessels not more than 15 GT. And also all other Small commercial vessels not more than 15 GT, including passenger vessels, with un-berthed accommodation, but not including ferries, on Home Trade IV and Minor Waters voyages.
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Course (SVOP) (26 hours): This is a stand-alone course addressing the particular needs for some minimum standards of training for operators of commercial vessels, other than tugs, up to 15 Gross Tonnage operating not more than 25 miles offshore; fishing vessels up to 15 Gross Tonnage or 12 meters overall length operating not more than 25 miles offshore; and Passenger vessels, work-boats, sport fishing charters. 5 GRT.

Radio Courses & Exam Prep

  • ROC-M (VHF-DSC) Radio License Courses: This course is currently offered as a home study and exam challenge. The regular exam is 60 questions, multiple-choice with 3 verbal questions asked as well. You must successfully complete all sections of the exam to pass. This course does not require a CDN number but does require ID.
