OUPV and Master's Upto 100 Ton Captains Licensing & Endorsements and MROP License & First Aid Courses in Chicago
Founded in 1987 and located in Nordland, US Maritime Academy (USMA) provides Captains License training, in Washington, Ohio and Illinois. They also administer the Coast Guard approved tests so that you don’t need to go to the Regional Examinations Center and take the Coast Guard tests.
The classes include all training materials and the curriculum include - navigation, chart reading, and the use of published navigation reference books. It also covers the rules governing the waters, including International, Inland, Great Lakes, and Western Rivers.
Finally, in the General section, we teach Boat Handling, Maintenance, Safety, Lifesaving Equipment, Stability, Weather, Marlinespike, Towing, Pollution, and Code of Federal Regulations.
US Maritime Academy Chicago is a local company. Upon completion, they also assist you in filling out your application so that your paperwork goes through without issues.

Training Programs
Captains Licensing & Endorsements
- Captains Class (OUPV & Master 100 Ton): This is a Coast Guard approved 80-hour Master and OUPV class. The classes meet 3 days per week for 8 weeks (5 weeks for Winter). During the course they cover all of the Coast Guard required material Including Charting, Navigation, Rules, Deck General, and Deck Safety.
- Captain's License Renewal Course: The Captain’s license is good for a period of 5 years and needs to be renewed then. At that time, you will need either 360 days of sea time during the last five years, or take a Renewal course, or take a very difficult open book test from the Coast Guard. US Maritime Academy Chicago offers a renewal course every year for those who don't accumulate enough sea time. It is an 8-hour course with open book tests at the end.
- Endorsements: US Maritime Academy Chicago offers both the Sailing and Commercial Assistance Towing endorsements. The Sailing Endorsement applies to your Master License. It allows you to take out an Inspected Sailboat with as many passengers as it is certified to hold. The Commercial Assistance Towing Endorsement allows you to work for assistance towing companies like Tow Boat US. In order to charge for assistance towing, the Operator must have the endorsement.
Other Courses & Tests
- Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP): US Maritime Academy Chicago can proctor all FCC tests by being a Test Center for iNarte (International Association of Radio, Telecommunication, and Electromagnetics), and the Element 1 test to get you your MROP. In addition to the test, they offer a prep class so that you have a better chance of passing.
- First Aid/CPR/AED: US Maritime Academy Chicago is certified by The National Safety Council to teach the First Aid and CPR/AED classes.
