Established in 1980 and located at Kingston in Jamaica as Caribbean Maritime Institute and later became a university in 2017, Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) is the premier tertiary institution for maritime education, training, research and consultancy in the Western Hemisphere. It was established through a joint project between the Government of Jamaica and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.
The CMU is the only International approved maritime education and training institution in Jamaica and has received ISO certification of the quality system by Lloyds of London. The programs are also approved by the University Council of Jamaica & also many programs are accredited Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), UK.
The CMU faculties include - Marine and Nautical Studies (Students enrolled in these programs are trained in shipboard operations to the management level), Shipping and Logistics (prepare candidates to gain entry-level, middle-level and higher level employment in these sectors, Engineering and Applied Technology (focuses on multidisciplinary growth areas that are globally relevant such as biotechnology, alternative energy, robotics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and Electrical engineering), & Advanced Skills and Professional Development (for those seeking alternative pathways to educational advancement and industry personnel who want to enhance their professional expertise.
Academic & Training Programs
Marine & Nautical Studies (Undergraduate Degree)
- BSc. Marine Transportation (4 years, full-time): The BSc in Marine Transportation is ideal if you want to study to become a ship's deck officer. It covers all the professional subjects as outlined in the STCW 1978 Convention, as amended.
- B.Eng. Marine Engineering (4 years, full-time): The BEng in Marine Engineering program is ideal if you want to study to become a ship's marine engineering officer. It covers all the professional subjects as outlined in the STCW Convention. This program will provide you with in-depth knowledge of different types of main propulsion machinery and auxiliary systems used on ships.
Marine & Nautical Studies (Professional)
- Master & Chief Mate (Part time): This program is designed for deck officers who are desirous of upgrading their qualification to become a Chief Officer and then Captain on board merchant trading ships.
- Chief Engineer & Second Engineer Officer (Part time): This program is designed for marine engineer officers who want to upgrade their qualification to become a Second Engineer Officer and then Chief Engineer Officer on board merchant trading ships.
Shipping & Logistics Programs (Full time/Part time)
- Diploma in Shipping and Logistics (2 years): The Diploma in Shipping and Logistics is a professional program designed to develop student’s ability to analyze and plan approaches to technical problems in shipping and logistics industry. The diploma is common to all programs in shipping & logistics degree programs (first year & second year).
- BSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Diploma in Shipping and Logistics + 2 years): The program has been developed to prepare candidates for supervisory and managerial positions within the shipping, logistics and supply chain industries.
- BSc in Port Management (Diploma in Shipping and Logistics + 2 years): This program caters for the over 14 Jamaican ports serving the international shipping industry with each port requiring a range of specialized skill-sets.
- BSc In International Shipping (Diploma in Shipping and Logistics + 2 years): As International Trade increases, there is a greater demand for ships to transport the Cargo, thus improving career prospects. This program caters for the same.
- BSc In Custom Processes, Freight Forwarding and Immigration (Diploma in Shipping and Logistics + 2 years): This program is designed to aid candidates develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become proficient specialist and practitioners in Customs Processes and Brokerage.
- BSc In Cruise Shipping and Marine Tourism (Diploma in Shipping and Logistics + 2 years): As cruise tourism continues to grow within the region, there is an increasing need for supervisory and management level training. This program caters for the same.
