Located on the east coast of Australia north of Sydney in New South Wales, Port Ash Australia is a manned ship model training center and provides training in ship handling for ships Masters, Officers, Marine Pilots, and Naval Officers, with particular emphasis on the practical aspects of the control of ships at low speeds in open, confined and shallow waters, with or without tug assistance. It has been designed for training for naval and seagoing vessels, using large model boats, and tidal and turbulent, flowing water conditions, representative of major sea ports of Australia.

Port Ash utilizes manned ship models to provide practical hands on training on its purpose built 5 acre lake, and employs experienced Marine Pilots as instructors to facilitate the training.The manmade lake constructed at 25:1 scale, has deep and shallow water areas. These areas have been carefully constructed to re-create the scale depths of water when approaching a typical harbor environment and the water depths within a typical harbor. The lake has approximately a third of the area dedicated to deep water (scale 50 m depth), another third is of medium depth (scale 25 m depth) and a third dedicated to shallow water areas of 14 m scale depth.

Shiphandling Training

• Port Ash provides highly time efficient training for new or experienced ship handlers. Maneuvers can be practiced repeatedly; time compression permits one hour of ship handling to be achieved in only twelve minutes. The ship-models behave as full size ships and experience squat, interaction, shallow water & bank effects. Planned maneuvering enables experience of all effects, with natural wind and artificially generated current.
• Ship models for training include - Handysize ship model, handymax ship model, panamax ship model, multipurpose ship model, azimuthing pod ship model, and large azimuthing pod ship model.
• The Port Ash Tug Model fleet consists of 8 remote controlled tug models. The fleet also comprises one Manned Tug Model, which allows a single Tug Master to operate the model from a seated position on board. The models range from 4 conventional twin screw, twin rudder/steering nozzle tug models, to 4 advanced ASD and ATD tug models.
