Hunter TAFE is a part of the largest vocational education and training organization in Australia, with 15 campuses, an annual enrolment of over 55,000 students and 2,500 expert teachers and support staff. Hunter provides a wide variety of programs from Short Courses and Certificates to Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas and various pathways to university.

Many of the programs offered at Hunter TAFE articulating into degrees and post-graduate study at university. The programs are offered through a range of delivery modes, such as in the workplace, online, face to face and a combination of these modes to enable each individual ease of access to training.

Hunter Maritime College (HMC) is one of the most advanced deck and marine engineering training facilities in the country and provides world-class training to industry professionals.  At the core of the HMC programs is a focus on providing training with a practical edge through training facilities that replicate the modern seagoing workplace including a replicated engine control room, heat engine lab and a fully operational auxiliary boiler system.  HMC is one of only three training facilities in Australian with state-of-the-art engine room and ship bridge simulators. The two simulators utilise 3D interactive technology to provide real life training scenarios on the shipping operations for Masters, Deck Officers and Engineering Officers.

Training Programs


Bachelor Degree Program

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science): Hunter Maritime College is now offering the opportunity to study the third year (Chief Mate/Master) of the Australian Maritime College’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) Degree at TAFE NSW Newcastle. The program is an ocean seafaring degree that is suitable for people who wish to embark on a career as a Navigating (Deck) Officer and Master on commercial vessels. Upon successful completion, students will have developed the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and operate vessels.

Marine Navigation Courses

  • Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) (FT): This qualification is suitable for people who work as a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal in the maritime industry. Depending on demand, this course may be available to study full-time, part-time evening.
  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 meters Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people working in the maritime industry as a Master on commercial vessels up to 24 metres in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 meters Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for those sailing as Master on vessels up to 35 meters in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or a Mate on vessels up to 80 meters in length.
  • Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master up to 80 meters Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry as a Master on vessels up to 80 meters operating in near coastal waters within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master up to 500 GT): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry as a Master, Chief Mate or Watchkeeper Deck on ships of less than 500 gross tonnage (GT) in any operating area.
  • Diploma of Maritime Operations (Watchkeeper Deck): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry as a Watchkeeper Deck. This qualification meets some of the requirements for the certification as a Watchkeeper (Deck) as described in Marine Orders 70, 71 and 74 under the Navigation Act 2012 by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Marine Engineering Courses

  • Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 500 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW, in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 3000 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 3 Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry as a Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 3000 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Diploma of Maritime Operations (Engineer Watchkeeper): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry as an Engineer Watchkeeper on a seagoing ship powered by main propulsion machinery of any propulsion power in any operating area.
  • Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 1): This qualification is suitable for people who work as an Engineer Class 1 in the maritime industry on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of any propulsion power in any operating area.
