Founded in 1799, Bremen University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences) is located centrally at Bremen Neustadt and a innovative and practically oriented university in Germany. Approximately 8 700 students enroll in 66 degree courses in areas such as engineering, natural sciences, economics and social sciences; about two-thirds are required to complete semesters of study or praxis abroad.
The structure of study at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences conforms to common international standards (ECTS) thereby offering attractive opportunities for study: individual components (modules) may be completed abroad. The University has about 325 partner universities in over 70 countries around the world and approximately 600 students travel abroad to study for one or two semesters each year.
16% of all students at the University come from other countries either as guest students or for their entire program of study. The programs are conducted in English and German. The international programs are all available in English.
Academic Programs
Bachelor Degree Programs
- BEng Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (German, 3.5 years including 5th semester internship abroad and 7th semester thesis): The goals, design and contents of the program are aimed at the needs which the labor market has for engineers in general as well as for those who work in the field of maritime technology in particular. This program is available only in German. This program is also available as Cooperative Degree Program. For Cooperative program, one-year on-the-job training at the shipyard plus 7 semesters including bachelor's thesis at Hochschule Bremen.
- BSc Nautical Sciences (ISMN) (English, 4 years including 12 months internship and Bachelor Thesis): The international degree program in Ship Management - Nautical Sciences (ISMN) at the City University of Applied Sciences Bremen is a full-time study program. The curriculum covers the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) to gain a Certificate of Competence as Navigational Officer of the Watch. The course contains also the theory for the STCW Management Level and qualifies to sail as Chief Officer or Master after the required sea service times. Graduates of the program with a seagoing experience of a minimum of 12 months (e.g., by completed apprenticeship as ships mechanic or traineeship as assistant nautical officer or completion of internships integrated into the study program) are qualified to directly engage in gainful employment as nautical officers on board of a seagoing ship.
- BA Shipping and Chartering (ISSC) (English, 3.5 years including internship abroad and Bachelor Thesis): International Degree Program in Shipping and Chartering offers you a broad range of courses in the areas of Maritime Business, management and law, nautical science/technology, and soft skills (presentation and negotiation skills etc.). In the first and second semesters, students learn the basics of shipping. Then, in the third and fourth semesters, topics are dealt with in greater depth. The fifth semester is reserved for a five-month internship abroad, and the seventh semester is devoted to the bachelor thesis.
