Established in 1957, the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) is the country's main maritime training institution and offers a full range of maritime diplomas and specialist diplomas, Certificate of Competency (CoC) courses as well as Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) courses. The courses are infused with technological perspectives that increase their relevance in today's world.

SMA trains students in 3 distinct maritime disciplines: Maritime Business, Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering (with Shipboard Operations and Offshore Technology options).

SMA is part of Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and is the first polytechnic established in Singapore to train technologists and professionals to support the industrialization and economic development of Singapore. Singapore Polytechnic offers 50 full-time diploma courses and a wide range of continuing education programs. It has ten academic schools and one academic department.

Training Programs

Deck & Marine Engineering Programs

  • Diploma in Nautical Studies (Full time, 3 years): This is a double award program that awards you both a diploma and the internationally recognized professional Class 3 Certificate of Competency (CoC) qualification that allows you to sail as a certified sea-going officer worldwide. This is an extensive program that prepares you to be versatile, equipping you with competencies to sail in any type of ship of any size worldwide. The program has a 12-month sea training phase which gives you first-hand experience in working on board a vessel. You can start off as a Junior Navigating Officer and progress to become a Ship Captain or Manager ashore.
  • Diploma in Marine Engineering (Full time, 3 years): The Diploma in Marine Engineering (DMR) course encompasses various engineering disciplines required to make you understand ship construction and how a ship works as an independent power plant. With the training received, a wide variety of career options and opportunities await you. You can be employed as marine engineers on ships as well as engineers in shipyards, offshore oil and gas industries and non-maritime engineering firms. Many of the graduates are also suitably employed in sales and service positions in various engineering companies. You will have the opportunity to choose between a sea-going or shore-based route during your third year.

Maritime Business & Management Programs

  • Diploma in Maritime Business (Full time, 3 years): The Diploma in Maritime Business is a three-year full-time program and includes a six-month Internship Program with an approved establishment. A practice-oriented course that links theory and practice through hands-on training, case studies and field visits and prepares you to be versatile, enabling you to gain employment in various sectors within the maritime industry. Six-month enhanced shore-based internship during the second year which provides enhanced first-hand experience of working in maritime related organizations.
  • Diploma (Conversion) in Maritime Business Management (Part time, 1 year): The course is designed is to equip non-maritime graduates with the knowledge and skills in shipping operations and logistics / offshore management so that they can join the maritime industry as senior executives/junior managers and perform their jobs with a greater level of competence and understanding. This course is suitable for shipping, logistics and offshore executives and higher, currently working in the maritime industry but do not possess maritime qualifications or relevant sea-going experience.
  • Diploma in Maritime and Offshore Management (Part time, 1 year): This program is to enable participants who do not possess maritime qualification to take up a career in the maritime and offshore industry. It aims to give the participants a greater level of understanding in shipping, logistics and offshore operations and management. The participants will be able to perform their jobs with a greater level of competence and understanding after completing this course. This course would also be suitable to nautical/engineering sea going junior officers who may be keen to supplement their technical and/or Navigational skills with commercial and shore based operational knowledge so as to prepare for a shore-based career in the local maritime industry.
  • Specialist Diploma in Port Operations and Management (Part time, 1 year): This structured 12-month work-study program will not only prepare the participants for a fruitful career in the port industry, it will help to build a critical pipeline of port operations officers to support the development of Singapore as a premier global hub port. It will provide the participants with a head-start in careers through the deepening of skills gained from acquiring relevant work experience and skills. Participants will enjoy skills-based wage increments and meaningful career advancement pathways upon program completion and satisfactory job performance.
  • Specialist Diploma in Maritime Superintendency (Part time, 1 year): This course is developed in alignment with the Skills Framework for Sea Transport under Technical Superintendent / Senior Superintendent and Marine Superintendent / Senior Marine Superintendent. The course syllabus is based on the critical functions key tasks and mapped with the Skills and Competencies listed in the Skills Maps of Technical and Marine Superintendents. At the end of the course, candidates will acquire a sound understanding of the roles and responsibilities of maritime superintendent to ensure safe, economic and efficient operation of the ships and offshore vessels.
