Nautical Science and Maritime Transport, and Marine Programs for Merchant Marine in Bilbao, Spain

Established 1980, University of the Basque Country (Universidad del País Vasco - UPV/EHU) is a public university of the Basque Country and offers over 60 Bachelor´s Degrees, over 100 official master programs, 44 professional & expert diplomas and 71 PhD programs. With over 45,000 students and 5,000 staff, the university is one of the largest in Spain. The University of the Basque Country has over 900 exchange agreements with other Spanish, European and International universities and host over 1,400 students from various countries.
Also the university participates in SICUE, the Spanish universities students´ exchange program; ERASMUS mobility program; and collaborations with educational institutions from the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Latin America. The Nautical School (Escuela Técnica Superior de Náutica y Máquinas Navales at Campus of Biscay) located at Portugalete in Bilbao was established in 1784 and offers various merchant marine and maritime programs. The school boasts of modern training facilities including Navigation Simulator, and School Ship Saltillo. Some of the courses may be available in English.

Academic & Training Programs
Bachelor's Degree Programs
- Bsc in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport (4 years): The Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport will train you to develop competencies related to navigation and transport management with subjects such as meteorology, navigation with radar, stowage and handling of Cargo and more. Finally, in the last year, you will complete 3 months of compulsory internships on board or 600 hours in maritime companies on shore. You may proceed for a career in merchant navy as captain or advance your qualification to master’s degree in a similar field. This degree has recognized Level 2 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (MECES) and corresponds to Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).
- BSc in Marine Engineering (4 years): The Degree in Marine Engineering will train you for the development of activities related to the design, maintenance and operation of any industrial installation both in the marine and terrestrial field. This degree at the UPV / EHU offers you the option of choosing two non-binding educational specialties - Energy and Propulsion, and Industrial Maintenance. The graduates may start their career in Merchant Marine in engineering department or maintenance department in the industrial sector.
Masters Degree Programs
- Master's Degree in Marine Engineering (60 ECTS): This program provides the knowledge and competences to operate, maintain, plan and manage facilities marinas from an interdisciplinary perspective that addresses the aspects technical, economic, environmental and safety aspects. This degree is recognized as Level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (MECES) and corresponds to Level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).
- Master's Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport (60 ECTS): This program provides a high level of training in nautical and maritime transport as including navigation, structure and behavior of ships in the sea, maritime transport and logistics, and environmental management. This program allows you to join Merchant Navy as captain among others.
PhD Program
- PhD in Nautical Engineering, Marine and Naval Radioelectronics: The purpose of this doctoral program is to train researchers trained for innovation and for the advancement of knowledge in the context of nautical, marine and naval radioelectronic engineering, who can fully integrate into the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and in the European Research Area (ERA). Research areas include Maritime Security, Transportation and Navigation, Naval Propulsion, and Maritime Radiocommunications.
