Merchant Marine Programs for Electortechnical, Marine Engineering, and Navigation Professions in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain
Established in 1792 and located at the Canary Islands, University of La Laguna (Universidad de La Laguna - ULL) is one of the oldest universities in Spain. The main campus of our university is located in the city of La Laguna (Island of Tenerife), a city that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The university homes over 20,000 students who are pursuing both undergraduate and postgraduate courses and over 1,600 professors.
ULL offers a wide selection of official undergraduate degrees and master’s degrees that, together with our range of doctorate programs, cover all subject areas such as Experimental Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Engineering including non-official programs and university extension courses.
According to Institute of Education in Shanghai world ranking (2015), the University of La Laguna comes the top 500 universities and the second best university in Spain in Humanities, according to a survey by the Everis Foundation. In addition, the Leiden ranking has ranked the it as the first Spanish university in scientific collaboration. The maritime programs are conducted by the ULL Agriculture, Nautical, Civil and Maritime Engineering Department. These programs are conducted in Spanish.
Academic & Training Programs
Maritime Programs (Undergraduate)
- Naval Electronic Engineering (4 years): The main objective of the Official Degree in Naval Radio-Electronic Engineering is to provide the basic knowledge and skills that Radio-Electronics Officers in the Merchant Navy should have to carry out their duties professionally. It also provides the basic knowledge and skills expected of a Second Class Radio-Electronics Officer in the Merchant Navy. This qualification, acquired by the Electrotechnical Officer, not only enables him to carry out his activity on board, but also covers any other activity carried out on land in the industrial sector of naval electronics, directly related to maritime radio communications systems, radio navigation, electronic and Electrical systems, rotating electrical machines, ship control and automation systems, as well as commercial management in companies engaged in marine electronics.
- Nautical and Maritime Engineering (4 years): The main aim of the degree is to provide the knowledge, basic technologies and the skills and abilities required by a Merchant Navy Pilot for performing his or her job. The professional competencies and responsibilities obtained upon completion of this degree not only qualify students to work aboard merchant vessels, but also in any other activity within the maritime sector that is directly related to sailing vessels or work in companies involved in the commerce generated by sailing vessels
- Marine Technology (4 years): The main aim of the degree is to provide the knowledge and basic technologies that a Merchant Navy Engineering Officer requires for performing his or her duties professionally. Transitory Provision Four of R.D. 1393/2007 establishes that the general guidelines are applicable to both the academic degrees (Graduate in Naval Engineering) and the professional qualification (Merchant Navy Engineering Officer). Ability to act as an officer on civilian vessels without any kind of limit and to captain civilian vessels up to 5,000 GT, once the Maritime Administration requirements have been met.
