Marine and Nautical Engineering, Maritime Technology and Maintenance, Maritime Management, Ports & Logistics Programs in Gijon

Established in 1574, University of Oviedo (Universidad de Oviedo) is a public university in Asturias, Spain with seven campuses spread over the central region of Asturias - Oviedo (El Cristo, El Milán, Llamaquique, Catalanes and Oviedo-Centre), Gijón and Mieres. With over 25,000 students and over 50 undergraduate programs and masters programs each, the university offers a full range of undergraduate degrees adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in all branches of knowledge and postgraduate degree programs.
The University of Oviedo has 16 Faculties and Schools, four affiliated institutions and the Professional School of Physical Education and Sports Medicine. Moreover, the International Center for Postgraduate Studies manages the Master's Degrees and PhD Programs. The University of Oviedo undertakes 80% of the R&D and Innovation activities carried out in Asturias, and has cutting-edge services and facilities to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to the business world.
The Higher Technical School of Merchant Marine at Gijón has the most advanced equipment in its laboratories and offers simulators, workshops and a planetarium that fully guarantee the quality of the education, For training it offers a practice room at the dock with several vessels and sailboats. The programs at the school have been developed in accordance with STCW. The ERASMUS Mobility agreements allow students to attend lectures in universities of Belgium and Poland. The School has made cooperation agreements with around 20 companies, apart from an agreement with ANAVE to allow students to embark its fleet. The programs are condusted in Spanish and some of the courses may be available in English.

Academic & Training Programs
Undergraduate Programs
- Degree in Marine (240 ECTS, 4 years): The objective of the Degree is to provide students with the basic knowledge needed by technical officer of the Merchant Navy. Other professional opportunities include the Maritime Administration, port, marine fleets, societies for classification and inspection, industrial etc.
- Degree in Nautical and Marine Transportation (240 ECTS, 4 years): The main objective of the Degree is to provide the students the necessary knowledge and skills needed by navigation officer of the Merchant Navy. After completing the on-board practice, they can develop their professional careers in the nautical field and in the land-based Maritime Administration.
Masters Degree Programs
- Masters' Degree in Maritime Technologies and Maintenance (60 ECTS): The Master's Degree in Marine and Maintenance Engineering offers both a theoretical and practical formation for professionals, so that they acquire the competences skills and abilities needed to work as Chief Engineers in the merchant navy or positions of responsibility in maintenance, optimization and management of energy installation. Graduates will be professionals that will have acquired applied, integrated and multidisciplinary knowledge in marine engineering with the professional competences that they may have to use to act as Chief Engineers.
- Master's Degree in Nautical and Management of Maritime Transportation (60 ECTS): The Master's Degree in Marine and Maintenance Engineering offers both a theoretical and practical formation for professionals, so that they acquire the competences skills and abilities needed to work as Captains in the merchant navy or positions of responsibility in maintenance in the enterprises in the sector. Graduates will be professionals that will have acquired applied, integrating and multidisciplinary knowledge in marine engineering.
Continuing Education
- Master's Degree in Port Management, Planning & Intermodal Transport (Interuniversity) (1 year): This Master's degree is intended for professionals already working in the field of logistics and ports. The university collaborates with University of La Coruña, University of Cádiz, Polytechnic University of Madrid, State Ports, University Institute of Maritime Studies, Shortsea Promotion Center SPAIN, EBHI (European Bulk Handling Installation), and International Association of Port Law – for this program.
- Master's Degree in Transportation & Logistics Management (2 years): On completion of the Master's course, graduates will present a profile suitable for the different positions in business management (logistics operators, trucking, shipping, and freight forwarders) such as Head of Logistics, Purchasing and Logistics Director or Operations Director.
